Is it running too rich?
#1
I have a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700 twin. I was plowing tonight and happened to get off my wheeler and look under it to see that the Y exhaust pipe coming out of the engine was glowing red and it did the whole time I was plowing. If it is glowing does that mean that I am running too rich and if so how do I adjust it?
Thanks

Check your spark plugs to see if they are burnt white ashy color(lean) or black (rich). Sounds to me like a lean condition which is not good.

You should just have to adjust the air/fuel mixture on the carb. I'm not real familiar with the older twins but there should be a a/f screw on the bottom of your carb somewhere. I tune by sound of the bike. I usually will run the a/f screw in or out until you find the highest rpms at idle and the smoothest running. A.K.A.= The sweet spot. It may not be a real tech way to do it, but it's worked for me for a many years now. Hopefully someone here with some hands on experience on the older 700's will chime in with anything I've missed or misconstrued. Another thing to check would be your intake. If your filter has come off or the intake boot is cracked or loose that could also cause a lean condition. Lean= to much air. Rich= to much fuel.

alot of them run lean in the cold winter as there jetted for warmer temps. a few have ran red Y pipes for this reason. you may have to jet up a little on the main jet for more fuel. how does the bike actually run? make sure you have the actual air filter and prefilter in place in the air box as well as the more the restricktion the more richer it will run.

Air fuel screw on botom of carb should be set at2.5 turns out, you can richen it up a bit by lowering the clip on the main needle one notch, my old 03 700 was lean too and thats how I fixed it, started and ran much better after adjustments
