Default Winch qestion

My old polaris winch on my 1999 sportsman seems to have a mind of it's own, some times it works and others it dosn't so i poped my cover on the machine to check the solenoid, it was so hot to the touch, you could fry a steak on it, is that right? or is this thing stuck open some times and stuck closed others?? i did have a regalotor problem last year, thinking might have somthing to do with that, no idea.

If it comes and goes as you say I'd just about bet the farm that the contactor is going bad. Been there, done that. Getting warm would be acceptable but not so hot that it would burn you. Something definitely wrong there. I doubt your regulator would affect it but you never know. Have you tested the voltage output of your regulator? Should be letting no more than 14.5-15volts max through.

Regulator was replaced last year, i'll check the conections, i just thought it was odd the solenoid would be burning hot, even when the winch is not in use. ty for the info.

the solenoid should not be getting hot unless something is wrong. is it the old style they used on the a2000 warn winches that has to places to bolt on the frame on each side? if so, the earlier ones they had were known for starting fires and then replaced them w/ an updated one that had black plastic protectors that slid onthe bracks that bolted on the frame.

i would replace it w/ out question! as long as the wires/cables are all hooked up corrctly and there is no bare wires grounding out or crossed then it should heat up. the only way there shoud be any heat is when you are pushing a winch to it's max and maybe have too light(meaning not enough thick gauge wire) cables causing it too heat up.
