I have Polaris Sportsman 500 1998.
i have problem, the engine not want to start.
before 2 weeks, not matter how much i push on the starter button, the engine not turn on, and the starter works very good, with fast Rotations.
one of every 11 times of trying , the starter get the engine work (6-8 seconds for each try)
this is not current/Voltage in the electric system i checked this.
the strange thing, that, in one pull of the hand starter rope, the engine starts.
...
and when the engine is on, it works very well, Quiet, good RPM, Working hard like a new.
...
Now.. after 2 weeks, the hand starter rope, was broken, and not work any more, and now.
yesterday, after 5-6 times of trying to start the engine. it was work finaly,
i was did a 30 minutes trip, The ATV run fast and strong, then i goes back home, i turn off the engine after 10 minutes, i try the turn the engine on, over 20-25 times of trying to start on the engine, and without sucess.
now i need to buy new starter.

**** some extra information:
- I have new 3 week old spark plug.
- i have some strange phenomenon, if i push the fuel gaz, in the same time that i push the starter button, the starter works very hard, it is like the engine is stuck. and if i Releases the fuel gaz.

What can be the problems ??

take recoil housing off, clean the flywheel and pickup coils up with some emery paper, there probably all rusted up from wateer in the recoil, fix the pull rope while your there, buy a new starter from db electric on e-bay

When the hand starter rope, was broken, i pulled out the magneto (Flywheel), and i cleaned all the coils and all the components inside, lot of dirt out of there.

Then i started to start on the engine. after 20-25 times, the starter dead.

I checked the voltage output when i run the starter,
The Red + Red/Black out to me 14VAC if i remember well.
And the Green + Gorund out to me also 14VAC if i remember well.

I had that, the electric starter works great but will not start the motor but the pull rope will start the motor.

Turned out the pickup coil/pluse coil's magnetic face was dirty and the flywheel was rusty where the pluse coil meets it. I cleaned both surfaces and it worked fine ever since.

Dirt and water will always work its way down the rope hole, I silicon the rope handle in place over the rope hole and there is no way water or dirt can get into the recoil now.

 

As i sayed, i cleaned all the coils and all the components inside, lot of dirt out of there.

 

I will look in the book and see what the measurement is as to how far the pickup coil should be from flywheel

How can i know if it compression problem ?
