Decision Pros

I have been out of the 4wheeler riding business for a year or 2. I noticed that you guys stay up-to-date on the ins and outs of Polaris. Please give me some direction.
I want a 4-wheeler that is a great on trails can hill climb, great in mud, fun to ride.
Polaris has made so many models I don't know which one to get. I want something that is reliable and I think I want a 4x4 that can also be 2 wheel, but I still want to be able to wheelie. I don't care if it is 4 or 2 stroke but I would like to have something fairly quite I have to ride by some houses to get to my favorite riding area. Only 2 problems which used one to get and I need to stay under $3900. Any help on size and years to avoid. I am 6'2 240. I also would like to have at least 1 rack or rack option.
Thanks, Jake

I would recomend a 325 trail boss. It will do most everything you want in stock condition except get the front wheels off off of the ground .
For $3900 a used larger machine should be attainable too . I have a good dealer near by that sells used machines with warranties . His used bikes get gone over well before they get re-sold, he even rebuilds the engines if they appear to be worn .
Good luck and have fun getting a new toy .

If you are going used, there are a lot of options. The 400 Scrambler is a great choice.
However, if you were considering adding racks to a scrambler, might I suggest the Xplorer. Same engine and 4wd system, but it comes standard with front & rear racks, a trailer hitch, and most importantly for work, low range. Low is not necessary for ramming around trails, but is a plus when hillclimbing and the belt will hold up much better when doing work or riding 2 up in the hills. I have an Xplorer and I can wheelie it from a standing start in HI and while moving up to about 6 or 8 MPH when in Low. Wheelies are easier with the white primary clutch spring than stock, and even easier with a green. Good luck.
PS if you are looking at anything pre-99, without the concentric drive, check out the pivots where the swingarm meets the frame real careful. Best way to check is put a floor jack under the middle of the frame to get the rear wheels up and see if it wiggles anywhere. They beefed it up in '99 for a reason. They didn't really break, but would sometimes work loose.
