Which Polaris is most Reliable?
#14
I was wondering why so many of you suggested the Expedition when I indicated I needed a used model that had a proven track record, etc. I did a search and could only find models made in 2000 or 2001 which means they are too expensive and have not been around long enough to be proven.
Now I realize, I was not spelling the name correctly. I guess it is Xpedition, not Expedition.
Also, I am surprised so many recommend the Magnum given its belt drive system. I know shaft drive manual gears to be reliable but always thought the belt drive autos were somewhat troublesome. Particularly since I am looking for a three year old model vs. a new one. Is the mangnum and the powertrain really that good compared to others?

Tealboy,
The magnum is absolutely one of the best. I think you would love it. I also don't think that our mostly autos are troublesum. You will only see year 2000 and 2001 Xpeditions, because they were a new design for 2000. They are very, very good machines. The tranny is one of the smoothest ones made. I would think it would be easy to deal on an Xpedition, because they [Polaris] are supposedly going to stop making them, due to very poor sales. I know ChopperBill can tell you more about the valdity of that rumor. If I were you, I would try to find an Xpedition. It would beat having a 3 year old machine, and would be manual, which it sounds like you would prefer. You can get a review of the 425 Xpedition off of the Polaris website. The review was done by DirtWheels I think.

We have a old 1975 Polaris 250Electra with a zillion miles on it and the and cluches never screwed up yet.The belt tranny is very reliable. We changed the belt many time on this sled but the belts last over 1000 miles on quads very easily, at only $30 each it's no big deal.

The Magnums the 325 or 500, the most reliable is the Mag 325 two wheel drive, but you want 4x4. The Sportsman is just as reliable and the biggest seller of all the Polaris atv's. they take more taking care of more grease fitting but other than that they are bulletproof. i have a 2000 with 1800 miles on it with out as much as a hiccup it has perfomed beyond what I could have ever imagined out of an atv. But if only looking for a hunting atv, go with the 325 mag 4x4, especially if price is an issue, the 325 is the least expensive full shaft drive Polaris 4x4. you migth score a good deal on a used 325 4x4 allot of people found them slow 40-43 mph top speed and traded up for a Mag 500 or Sportsman.
