Honestly, I'd stay from a used polaris. my brother bought a used 94 400 4by4, and it had a claimed 800 miles. at 2000 miles, the piston cracked into several pieces and ruined the bottom end. He only got $800 out of it. it was smooth and fast, but heavy and "loose".The japeneese makes seem to be more reliable and better thought out. The most reliable polaris in my opinion, either the 325 mag, or the 500. The 325's though, have little power for trail riding. a rancher 350 and bigbear 400 smoked the 325(expedition, but same 325 motor) in a drag race. Nothing against polaris though. they are now far better than they were several years back.

Right on Wheeliedude, the old three chain Polaris
models are not #1 in the durability department. They are fast but require more TLC than the average ATVer may wish to invest.

The two stroke 400 models made a quantum leap in durability in 1996 and this was further improved in 1999 but they are still not up to the durability standards of the "Shaft Ride" models.

In certain areas 1999 Magnum 500s with EBS can be had for reasonable prices and would be a nice model to have.

2000 Polaris Sportsman 500, $5500, 1500 miles, 26" Goodyear Mudrunners, 48" Polaris Snowplow, Moose Air Filter and Shock Covers, been in the shop once, and that was driver error: burnt belt. put new belt on, just put new brakes on all the way around. take it or leave it, but this is a used 4x4

Noise is irrelevant, wildlife, especially deer, hear and smell us miles away.

if you buy a used Polaris get a 1998 or newer possibly a 99 or 2000 each year newer they improved there reliability allot, even though i ride with several 1996 and older Polaris machines that have thousands of miles on them and no breakdowns, i would not actually buy any used atv older than a couple years no matter who made it. Unless it is someone who bought it rode it a few times parked and and never touched it again, hard to say really how hard some one migth have beaten it, i have seen thoroughly trashed 2 year old Honda's that were not worth 75 bucks and people asking practically what they cost new. buying used you have to be careful no matter what the brand. I have a freind right now who has a one year old machine not a Polaris it looks good but i would not give him 500 dollars for it he beats it bad. cleans it up good, you would never know what he does to it when he rides it by looking at it, but WOW he tortures that machine, he has already had 800 dollars of repairs to the clutch and tranny. but he would get book value for it, because if you looked at it and hear him tell how he drives it you would think he used it only to pick flowers for his grammy. I always buy new.
