u-joint and wheel bearing question
#1
Both inner and outer u-joints and the rear wheel bearings are bad on my Sportsman. I got everything apart and am getting ready to put it back together. Couple of questions:
- Does it matter which way the bearing goes in? It appears to be symmetrical, so I don't think it matters, but I wanted to check before I get it pressed in.
- I know the u-joints need to be pre-greased before installation. Do I just keep pumping them full until it comes out of the caps? I'm assuming I need to hold the caps on so they don't pop off and throw needle bearings everywhere.
- What is the easiest way to get the u-joints back in? Do I push the opposing caps in simultaneously with a vice, or do I push them in one at a time with the press?

You can do two(one across from the other) just slip both caps on on opposite sides. I always just used a small socket (little smaller than the cap and used my air hammer with a dull bit and seated the caps and then snapped in the retaining clips.) do one side and then the other. Make sure you replace the joint as the one you are removing with regards to zerk fitting placement! Will be hard to grease if you don't! Just grease until you barely see grease come out,!! Doesn't matter which way on the bearing,BUT best to heat the hub to remove and replace the new bearing. OPT

I got them all installed, I used the press to push them in, I've ruined too much stuff trying to do it with the air hammer. Some of the u-joints were so tight in there that I think the press was the only way.
No more squeaking joints and wibbly-wobbly going down the road.
