Question Smoking Polaris 250?

Hi guys,

It has been awhile since I have visited, but everytime I do I am impressed with the help I get. So, here I am again. I have an 1993 Polaris trail boss 250. It runs great, Seems to have great compression, but it smokes like crazy. My father in law has a 2 stroke as well and his smokes very little compared to mine. It seems like it is getting to much oil. Is there a quick fix to this? Or do I have a more serious problem. Someone was telling me you can adjust the amount of oil going into the engine??? Thanks for your help.

As long as you're using a proper 2-stroke oil in your tank, and you're not premixing also then I would recommend running a compression test on it to see where you're at. If that's good it could be time to rebuild your oil pump. I imagine other folks will have some other ideas as well.

Some of the time excess smoke can come from oil build up in the exhaust pipe,PLUS a worn needle and seat can also give the impression of over oiling by allowing too much fuel in the cylinder along with the oil injection causing an excess amount of smoke!. Had this happen a lot as machines got older. I would just check compression to be on the safe side, and if the carb hasn't been touched, may be time for a needle and seat. Pumps are pretty well set from the factory to about 40 to 50-1 ratio. OPT
