Decided I had little to lose by trying t clean those dirty connection areas and Bingo! Fired right up and runs fine. You were right, it was electrical.
Think I need to get a clutch puller and try my luck on the other side of the case to get a starter in. Little hesitant about the clutch assy. all falling to pieces in my hands. Will have to re-visit earlier discussion son that.
As in the past.... THANK YOU very much for your patience and replies.

Look at the parts breakdown at Cycle Parts Warehouse on your model at the recoil section. Could be part of the spiral spring OR the case spring if you say the ratchet spring is still attached! Just clean the stator and inside the flywheel with alcohol or electrical contact cleaner(no harsh brake cleaner, etc),plus if either exciter wire zeros out on your ohm meter while touching one probe to ground, then exciter has shorted out! Exciter coils can be purchased separately. #3083422 Polaris exciter number, or you can obtain at aftermarket sources! OPT

Cleaned those connections and put it back together and it fired right up... revved up fine... no breaking up. Started & stopped several times. Worked a little on idle adjustment and went to drive it. Went ten feet and it started sputtering all over again! Good grief! Not sure why the cleaning seemed to work so well. Maybe it helped but the connections are worn out on the coil? Will have to look inside again and try testing the exciter wires.
