If you go to a smaller front sprocket (2X4) will it affect acceleration or will the CVT compensate for it and just give you a couple more MPH on top? Let me know if you have tried different gearing and what the outcome was.

Dropping a tooth on the front is gearing down.Less top end, more acceleration.

Oops, thanks for the correction, yes i meant up a tooth on the front sprocket. Anyone try this, if so what was the result? Seams like the CVT would just maintain the proper RPM and keep upshifting untill the clutches were at full throw. Then with the slightly taller gearing the top speed would be up a couple (if there was enough motor for the gearing)

You are pretty much right. The CVT will compensate for somewhat taller gearing. Keep in mind that you will be putting more strain on the belt at startup.

I had an Xpress 400 that had taller gearing and the green primary spring. Ran side-by-side with a stock Xpress up to about 45 MPH, then pulled away. Top speed was over 65. I think the extra initial 'bite' of the green spring kind of compensated for the taller initial gearing. I used low range for slow speed maneuvering a lot, and got over 6000 miles out of my belt.

Those 400 Xpress's are really nice atv's I got a riding buddy with a 96 and he has 3500 miles and it is all original. He is just this year puting on new tires and chains and sprockets. It is darn fast too, I can be wide open on my SP 500 and he will go right by me. he must get 63-65 out of it.

Thanks for the info, think im going to try this. I'll go up a tooth on the front sprocket and get an aggressive clutch kit for a stock motor. Those two additions and the K&N filter i have in it should give me a little more zoom for a small amount of $$$$. (Taxes killed me this year, went into another tax bracket and just found out, OUCH)
