500 H.O. low vs. high range

Yes there gearing is different ,one has a high range only tranny and the other has a tranny with both low and high.

If your low range ever quits working on your Sportsman you basically have a Scrambler with racks. LOL
They will do it, the belt just won't last as long, and likely some cvt parts too. I know on mine I can feel where the clutch stops slipping on the belt right around the 7 mph and higher when I'm in high range.
Imo if you keep dipping below 7 mph in H your belt life must drop. Can't say I have I have proof as I try to avoid that senario, but it makes sense to me. Of couse the heavier the machine is loaded the more the wear will increase.

wind it out in low, my 2012 550 touring is turning 5000 rpm at 30 mph in high

That's not bad. Hmmmmm..... may make me rethink an 850 for the next quad. If I can tool along at 30 in the snow in low I'd be happy.... hmmm....

No question an 850 would have done better being able to turn the tires faster, no substitue for power in snow.

I'm fine with the 550. Doug wont let me take the 850 Touring because he thinks he should return at least one of these that is resalable.
