my freind just rode my rancher and decided he wants to trade in his dirtbike. he doesnt have a lot of mony and is looking at a explorer 250 4x4 (used). i looked at the specs, it's a 250cc two stroke, and the qaud weighs 560 pounds (i think). what im wondering is if it has good power for trail riding, and if it has a good top speed.
thanks.

The top speed will roughly be about the speed of your quad. Maybe just a hair slower.
But he will have no problems trail riding. The Xplorer is a great bike, it rides nice, has 4x4, and is decent on power for the price. There are also lots if power making parts avaliable from the aftermarket world for this quad.
I think he will be happy with it if he buys one.

I think it is a pretty good atv.My brother has one and I have spent a lot of time on it. It has good power and a nice ride (for a 4X4). It will climb just about anything in low range. The 4X4 is very impressive even with the stock tires. It does well in deep water but the downside is you need to drain starter afterwards. Powerwise it probably has more hp than your machine and a $300 pipe can increase it almost 50%. There is more maintenance with the chain but it is worth it to get 9" of travel in the rear.

A ported and piped Xplorer 250 will keep up with the Rubicon on the trail. They can make that much power if set up right.

I owned a 2000 Xplorer 4x4 250 for 8 months really nice machine. Would go anywere, yeah I could easily beat a 300 Honda 4x4. I was even with a 1996 425 Magnum 4x4 till 45 (which was the top speed of mine 45) or so he has a little more top end. I kept up well with 350's and up. Personally I disliked the smaller front tires, and if i had kept it would have upgraded them. It ran great, I got the Sportsman because i ride double allot and even though it handled it decently the 500 is better for riding double. I was very suprised at the power the 250 two stroke puts out, It was faster than the 2000 Magnum 325 2x4. Like I said my only complaint was that i thought for my personal riding style 24 inch tires on the front would have been nice.

I have a 2001 explore 4x4 250 and I love it. It will almost keep up with my 2001 trailblazer The ride is great and It climbs hill better than my old honda 300 4x4. The true 4 wheel drive realy helps. With stock tires it does as good as the honda did with vampires. It has lots of power and is easyly hopped up. My only compaint is when going through real deep water you have to drain the starter. After the first time going trough 2 foot deep or deaper I have to drain out about 16 oz of water. I have had it up to the gas tank a couple of time and shows no sign of slipping or drownding out. The low range is great when going up hills and in tight places.
highly recomend the explore 250 I would buy another one but my next one is a scrambler 400.

good luck

today we made the trip to the atv dealer. my freind did a trade in on his 80cc dirt bike. unfortunatly he didnt have enough cash to get the explorer. but he got a used trail boss 250, he got a really good deal on it, it in great conditoin but needs a new rear chain. it's been raining but from the short ride i took it handles really good with a soft ride, and it's pretty peppy qaud.
