Lost all electrical on Sportsman 700
#1
Another day, another problem...When riding today, in the worst possible place to die, (in the marsh behind my house) my 06 carbed, 700 sportsman died, I tried to restart it and had no electrical power to the speedo. totally graveyard dead. Checked all the battery and solenoid connections...all clean and tight, since there both new...walked to the house and got my trusty Argo 6x6 and pulled it out of the marsh.. I tried the key on the quad again and it started right up like nothing ever happened and now appears fine..Nothing anywhere seems loose. I'm thinking when I finish the brakes on this one, she may end up on Craigslist or ebay!!!
Any clues of where to start fixing this one?

First thing I can think of is the ecm (06 carb model is on the expanded recall list) If you have had the "black" Chinese ecm updated for the American made module I've had these go out also along with several posters having had to replace multiple ecms also. The ecms can do some strange things as it also controls charging back to the battery along with the cooling fan operation. OPT

Okay...its going again, but now i'm really perplexed...I was worried it was the power module or ECM, but the new $77 keyswitch is the problem. After finding voltage at the switch with my test light I pulled the wires off of the switch and shorted them with test leads and it cranked right up...I can put a meter across the switch terminals and sometimes it will make the circuit, and sometimes not. A brand new switch too..I opened it up and there is no evidence of arcing or heat inside the switch. In fact there's not much current going through the switch anyway. You can hold the bare wires with your fingers to crank it and there's no heat at all....just wondering why it would crap out so quickly? Anyone else had ignition switch problems?

For those who may have this problem, the keyswitch is really easy to disassemble, and being the cheapskate that I am, I decided to take it apart and clean up the contacts inside. It now works fine..I guess i'll keep my small thin blade screwdriver with me in case it happens again..

I believe unrelated- i had engine only loss of power failure on previous ride. Would restart but die when applied power. When cold would run fine for 10 mins then same. Replacing spark plug seems to have fixed that.
