400 Scrambler enigne Will a 500 fit in its place?
Just picked up a 400 Scrambler. I believe it is a 97 model. Bought it thinking it was a 99 but realized it has a chain drive front end and the front frame is a bit different than my '03 500 and my 05 500. It seems 400 parts are harder to come by than 500 parts are. (Was hoping to find a good running used 400 motor) Will a 500 fit in its place? If so do any mods need made? Thanks!

Motor mounts would have to be fabricated, would have to change the complete wiring harness, plus anything else I've forgotten. Hard to find a good used running 400 motor without it needing someone repaired on it,best to rebuild the one you've got or find a later model 500 scrambler if that's what you really want. OPT

Hot Rod kits are what I usually used when rebuilding cranks. Cheaper than oem. Plus Wiseco pistons are the best. Just check around for the best prices and a reasonable machine shop or dealer to install the new rod and bearing and true up the crank shaft. If you don't have a manual there are several sites you can download one on the 400 engine, just Google it up!. Doesn't matter if if it's an Explorer 400,Scrambler 400, earlier 400 2 x4 or 4x4. The engine is basically the same. Be careful buying used parts such as cases, etc unless you can check the parts out first. The 400 is a good engine, but can become expensive when it's time to rebuild,if other items are damaged such as the counter balancer. Plus Cycle Parts Warehouse and Cheap Cycle Parts are about the cheapest for oem parts. OPT
