98 Polaris 500Sportsman wobble
#1
Hi,
We have a wobble in the rear of the 98 500 Sportsman. The rear shock is closer to the A arm on the left side than on the right. We took the lower control arm off and the shaft i nside it was bent. Replaced the shaft it still wobbled so bought new lower control arm. Still doing it. HELP

Welcome to the forum! Wobble could be from a bad hub carrier bearing, but most of the time I experienced this was from worn out u joints on the drive shafts. They can cause the atv to wobble, drive side ways when taking off, etc. Jack up the atv and turn each tire back and forth while looking at the u joints. If you feel and see excessive play best to replace them before the yoke is wallowed out and the entire shaft has to be replaced. This drive shaft is expensive (over $400). The u joints are about 22 bucks each at Cycle Parts Warehouse if this could be the problem,or maybe you can find em cheaper on Ebay. Some posters may know if you can get em at a local auto store. Takes four u joints. Plus this type drive shaft can't be updated to the later cv drive shaft. OPT

So we have replaced the lower control arm, the shaft in the control arm, the inner and outer u joints and the hub bearings. It is still wobbling just as bad the only other thing I can think of would be the A arm. It puzzles me that the rear shock is so close to the A arm on the left (where we are having the problem) and the right you can fit your finger in between. Do you have any ideas?? This is getting expensive.

Also if we get the front tires off the ground and drive the Sportsman ahead it wobbles bad enough that it makes like S turns on the garage floor you can actually see it in the cement weaving back and forth.

Have you checked that the rear wheel rim might be bent also or even the wheel hub up against the carrier housing? Just jack it up,let it run and see if you can notice any wobble in the tire area itself. You can also bend cv spindles, but doesn't happen very often. Plus is the wheel tight against the hub,no play back and forth? Since it was wrecked it could be any of this or even the frame could be tweaked a little at the lower or upper control arm area. Could explain why the shock could be closer on the left side. Just have to guess what all to check out since we can't see it. OPT
