Default 97 250 trail boss

i have a trail boss that just started giving me trouble. it ran fine then one day it would just idle and if i hit the gas it would die out. i have spark and fuel. checked the compression it was 90. a guy at a polaris shop said if its below 130 its no good. so i took the head and jug off and the rings seem good. but there was a lot of gas in the exhaust and i see it in the base too. any ideas on what to do? any advise would be great. thank you.

Welcome to the forum! The guy at the shop is right ,90 pounds is too low on compression. Plus gas in the exhaust is from not being able to compress and burn properly, bypassing the piston and rings filling the crank case and into the exhaust. Sounds like time to do a rebuild. The cylinder needs to measured for an oversize piston, plus have the bottom end checked out(rod, crank bearings, etc) Sometimes you can get by with just a top end,but most times a new rod kit and crank bearings are needed. ok i got my trailboss running again. but now the run/stop switch on the handle bar needs to be unhooked in order for it to run right. with this unplugged i have a headlight, but no tail light or brake light. is there anyway for the rear lights to work with this unhooked?

Sounds like you need a new left control switch or tear into the old one to see what's shorting it out. Could just be the wiring from the switch back into the harness shorting out,But I have replaced a bunch of left control switches over the years. OPT
