The older models could start without a battery as the ignitions are magnetically triggered instead of electrically triggered, but if the battery is dead and won't charge, the voltage from the reg/rectifier will bypass the battery and blow out instrument and headlight bulbs if you turn em on. At least you could make it home, but would have to do it in the dark. OPT.

My only experience in this was I rode my 1989 Yamaha 350 Big Bear without a battery for years the only thing I notice was dim head lights.
I rode My Sportsman 500 with a dead battery for a month and everything worked normal, lights AWD, everything started up in one pull.

If it's a Polaris Trail Blazer then sounds like someone has been tampering and eliminated the electric start system. Check underneath that you still have a starter motor or at least you have a block off plate made for it. Have had some show up like this with starters missing and a direct opening for water and mud to enter. The battery is mainly for the starter and lights. Plus does it still have the regulator /rectifier under the headlight pod or has this been removed? OPT
