Default Code 26

Have a '09 Sportsman 800 Touring and check engine light just went on. Ran the diagnostics, and came up with a code 26-Vechicle Speed Sensor-Implausible. Well, I can understand most of that, but being close to SSI, "implausible" was a word I don't have in my vocabulary. From what I come up with is that there is no troubleshooting, replace it. My problem is, I question whether the sensor is bad. The ATV seems to be off on the idling circuit. Does anyone know if this sensor circuit can be troubleshot or should I get into the TPS circuitry?

If the speed sensor is bad no speed or mileage accumulation will work. If speedo acts ok,then I would just disconnect battery for about 30 seconds and see if it removes the code. If idle is erratic then it could be the old problem of map sensor wiring shorts. Look at the "sticky" in the expert section about this problem. OPT

Default code 26

Thanks OPT for the advise. Found a bare wire on TPS harness, used liquid electrical tape to seal. Ran codes again, after running the ATV around for a bit, this time coded out as a 22

Just unhook the battery for thirty seconds and see if the codes clear. OPT

Sorry OPT for the confusion, I ran the ATV around prior to repair. The ATV coded out a 22, that's when I went to the TPS wiring and found the Green wire to have a bare spot. Decided against Polaris repair kit, went for liquid electrical tape. All is good now, power is back, fuel economy, no hesitation

If you do need a tps harness kit in the future check the "sticky" at the top of the expert section on stronger efi harness kits.DON'T blame you on the Polaris kit, same thin wiring that you already have! Good luck on the liquid tape. OPT

liquid tape is a success OPT. Can't believe Polaris uses thin wire on such a critical wire harness. Wrapped up the harness with weatherproof foam backed tape, that should eliminate any contact to metal. Thanks again OPT for the help
