06 Polaris Hawkeye 300 4x2 - buy one with a broken fuel line?
#1
So I currently have two quads: A Polaris Sportsman 90 and a Honda Recon 250. I'm looking for another one with IRS, but don't want to spend much. I've found one local that is a Polaris Hawkeye 300 (2006) 4x2, that the owner states has a broken plastic gas line. Without seeing it, I interpret it to mean that a portion of the gas line tubing is broken and simply needs to be replaced. If so, I'd imagine that it's simple enough.
That aside, it looks to be in good condition from the pics. Is there anything I should know about the 06 Polaris Hawkeye 4x2's? Or anything to look for? Or anything about replacing a broken gas line?
Thanks!

I had an 07 4x4 and its a great beginner type quad. The reason I say beginner is it's really down on power...revs like hell and you don't really go anywhere! The gas line is an easy fix so I'm just wondering if that's an excuse to cover some more serious problem. Presumably you can't start or ride it before buying and fixing which would scare me.

There are a few common issues to watch for with those: They had a recall on some for steering issues. The carb jetting is another one and the rear frame assembly tears near the bolts and breaks the rear wheels loose. Other than those common issues, they are decent little quads.

So I went and checked it out in person. Owner was mistaken - gas line seems just fine.
However, he said that since he moved, it has been sitting stagnant in his garage for 7 months without having been started or ridden, with the fuel sitting in it. Battery is also dead.
He started it with the pull starter and it fired up first time with the choke all the way engaged. If he let go of the choke, it dies out. Not sure if that's a function of fuel sitting for so long, carb adjustment/cleaning needed, or a harbinger of something else.
Any ideas?

That's a pretty good sign if it fired up first pull.
Look along the bottom of the frame near the axles in the rear where the bolts come through. See if there is any metal fatigue/tearing going on. Ask if he replaced the bottom subframe. That part has a high failure rate and it's about a $400 fix at a shop. A carb cleaning and re-jetting is very inexpensive. I see your from AZ, Four Seasons Motorsports in Rye understands the Hawkeye issues real well.

Ok, it's in really good condition cosmetically. Has 1100 miles on it. I picked it up cheap, so I'll have to hope that there isn't something majorly wrong with it... maybe clean out the carb and use some seafoam or stabil in the fuel and run it for a bit.
I guess if worse comes to worse, I can part it out and make $$. I paid $800 for it and will pick it up tomorrow.

Well, after going through the pick up of it and registration, title process, etc... Total "out the door" minus my time was $1005. Still a great deal if I can get it running.
Battery was the stock battery and had no water in it at all. Put some in and ran a battery tender on it overnight. End result was about 9V, so it's dead. Starts up fine with the pull starter and choke fully engaged. Sputters and dies if I close the choke. Dies as I give it throttle (with or without choke). I did replace the spark plug - no help.
Air filter is clean. Also tried running it with the airbox open to let in much air. No difference.
So it has come down to cleaning the carb and possibly adjusting idle. This will be my first go at cleaning the carb. Anyone know of a good tutorial for accessing it and cleaning it? Looks to be fairly accessible without major disassembly.
