I just got my 1997 Scrambler 400 a coulpe days ago. And my 4x4 button does not work. The first day or so I had it, the light on the button would come on when you pushed the button. But would go off when you let off the button. Now, yesterday, the light won't even come on. What is wrong? Do I need to get a new button from the dealer? Or can I open it up and fix it myself? Thank you.

I have not had the 4x4 switch apart so I cannot help you with that. If I were you I would take it back to the dealer (I assume it is under warranty) and have him/her fix it.

Also, if the AWD indicator bulb burns out, your 4X4 hubs will not engage. I was told that the bulb serves as the fuse for the engagement system. Can anyone confirm this has happened to them before?

About that light bulb thing....do you know how to open up the switch? Or can it even be done?

I'm not sure about the 4X4 switch, but I did take apart the light/run/reverse O/R switch to disenguage the O/R switch on my "99" Scambler 500. I took it apart while it was still on the bars "MISTAKE"!! Parts everywhere, springs, copper pieces, a bearing....Oooops.
After standing around with a stupid look on my face scratching my head for awhile, I got down on my hand and knees and found all the little parts. It took a little while but I got it back together and only had two little copper pieces left over. Oh well, "Parts iz Parts". (Actually the little copper pieces, on the O/R button are what you need to remove to overide the switch). If you are going to take the 4X4 switch apart, I would suggest you take the switch housing off the bars first (if possible). Then take it apart...very slowly in a bucket or something so if parts go flying you won't loose them. After that I couldn't tell ya about the bulb, haven't been there, haven't done that.

Rob, you can over-ride the switch with just modifying some wires, and not taking apart the housing. When installing my split brake I did take the switch housing off. Since the wires can just unlug, it's easy to take it off without pulling wires out everywhere.

I have seen 3 ways you can over-ride the switch.

The first is really easy to do and easy to put back to normal, but you still have to press the button for 4x4 in reverse just not for full power. The second is harder to put back to normal, but completely bypass's the over-ride button, but the reverse light is always on. The third does the same as the second, but requires more work, but the reverse light only comes on in reverse.

I have never seen the way you talked about though, by actualy taking the switch housing apart. Oh well, if it works it works!

While I have never done this, this way, Per the wiring diagram (check your), if you remove the GRN wire from the Speed Limiter and tape it and jumper the PUR to GRY/W wire on your term bd (OverRide sw to Shifter sw), this should be like pushing the OverRide P/B in all of the time. I would check the action of the switch prior to jumpering anything with a trusted OHM meter first.

NOTICE, doing this type of mod can/will be dangerous, I have done mods to Reverse OverRide before, but only to take them off do to the inherent danger of this. If I was to do it again, I would think about rigging up a switch to do the same job, but just not via a P/B, but to be use in-line of the P/B. Also depending on your model of Polaris, the colors mentioned above DO CHANGE, check you wiring schmatic before doing any type of work like this, }:-))

Adam, Yea I figured out that the housing comes off real easy, after my little mishap hehe. Once off it is really not that difficult to take apart and put together. Once apart, just remove the two little copper pieces (look like this ]])from the inside of the o/r button. These copper pieces are what slide and make contact between the two contacts when the button is pushed in. (save the two copper pieces in case you want to put them back in) The reverse light works when in reverse and the overide button is now overidden.

I have figured out that if you do not have your ignition key turned on all the way the awd button will not come on and your awd will not work. I have a couple of keys on the ring and when i went around a corner they caught the gas cap and turned off partially. The engine will still run but the awd system will not work.

Rob,

I might want to try this. So this isn't permanent, and gives 4x4 as well as full power in reverse without pushing the button? And it doesn't leave the light on all the time?
