Default 2001 Trail Boss Ignition Problems

Hey I am a new member and enjoy the forum. I have a 2001 trail boss that I have been restoring. Put a new starter on got it working but there have been some intermitten problems. The key would not always cut off the motor and at times it would not disengage the starter and I would have to turn the key back to stop the starter from contining to run. Now it does not work at all. I suspect I have a bad ignition switch but wanted some advise as I am not an electrical kind of guy. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks

Welcome! Problem could be a sticking starter bendix, solenoid problem, or the ignition switch also as you mentioned. Bendix could stay out and not retract. I've seen solenoids short out allowing starters to continually turn, along with ignition switch shorts. If it's not doing any thing, just pull the recoil housing and check the starter bendix operation. If it retracts out and back in easily, then possible switch or solenoid. You can check that the solenoid is jumping power to the starter wire with just a test light. Or bridge across the solenoid to see if the starter operation is ok. OPT

Prior to it not working when I would turn the key I would get the green neutral light and the head lights would come on. That what was moving me to a switch issue or a wiring problem

You can always pull the gas tank plastic cover and the headlight cover and check the switch wiring and the indicator panel connections for any bare wires that could be causing the problems. You can ohm out the switch on and off position along with the left control switch start button. OPT

If you're sure the switch is bad, replace it. OPT
