2012 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO shutting off

I agree as I use it often Asa learning tool. Been riding 30 years in dirt and 25 on street. Never had a key for my dirt bikes and this isn't first ATV. So a lot of ATV specific info is new to me.

I had this same exact problem on my 500 that I bought 2 months ago. It turned out to be the throttle cable contacts inside the throttle box on mine. If you take your throttle and pull it forward or toward the fuel tank(instead of pushing outward with your thumb to give it gas), the machine should NOT quit. If it does, then it needs to be adjusted by Polaris. They should be adjusted correctly from the assembly process but that apparently does not happen all of the time. LMK if that is it but I bet it is. Mine would shut off when I turned the handle bars or I was going down hill. Got it adjusted and no more problems...
Oh. And a perfect example of what NOT to hang on your key. This shut mine down...

Biggest key fob I've seen in awhile! This would kill it every time you turned the bars! If the throttle slack at the thumb lever is more than 1/8",when you let off the throttle the contacts will touch and the engine will die! I had dozens of people drag their machines into the shop and I just fixed the problem while on the trucks or trailers! The throttle cable will stretch over time and you need to keep the slack adjusted. The main purpose if adjusted properly is that the contacts are kept open and if a tree branch, etc was to grab the cable, once you let off the throttle the contacts would touch, retarding spark, which would keep the machine from running wild! This is the best safety device that Polaris came up with years ago. OPT
