No you can be in any range at any speed when you engage AWD as long as the ATV is moving. You also can be in high range while riding at low speeds its just when the ATV is under load like towing ,plowing or slow low traction sections (Thick Mud,steep hills) that low range is best.
You never hit the AWD button while the rear wheels are spinning and the front wheels are "not", that would cause the front wheels to suddenly engage and catch up with the rear wheels in there spin from a stand still. Thats very hard on the front diff.
Just make sure the front and back wheels are at the same speed when engaging the AWD.

What country do you live in that you can ride on the roads ? I'm in Canada and can also ride the roads it's sure better than having to trailer to ride , start it up and drive out your driveway I had the same machine as you but a 08 , it was rock solid reliable I loved it . Just keep up your maintenance ride safe & enjoy .
