Default 2001 sportsman 500HO issue

Okay here we go. Started out with head lights going dim on a night ride which I don't do very often, battery dead after not riding for several months so bought a battery and rode for a few days the ATV started over heating on our trip so fought that for the day then new battery would not hold charge, realized fan not running thinking fan runs off battery??? So can anyone take this info and let me know what it is. Stator or rectifier I'm sure but where is stator?

Thanks for your help!!!!

Check with a meter that the yellow to yellow/red stator wires show around 0.13 ohms resistance between them plus the yellow must not zero out to ground. If it does the stator charge coil could be the problem and the stator would need to be replaced. This is just to eliminate the stator charge coil as the problem. Also check that all wires on the regulator/rectifier are plugged in. Some were bad about the red wire connector coming loose. If you narrow it down to the regulator here's a cheap place to get them. When you crank it up make sure you leave the radiator cap off until the fan cycles on and off a couple times to remove any trapped air since it overheated with you. Then top off the radiator and overflow bottle. OPT

OPT - you nailed it I finally found time to dive in to this thing and sure enough red wire was in the plastic but not plugged in very well I spreaded it back out and plugged it in. So do I need to by whole new rect. or can I splice on a new connector?

By all means splice it or make a new connector for both ends. No sense in buying a new one if this one works! Glad you found the problem! OPT
