07 Polaris rear axle help!
#1
I am replacing the right rear axle on my 700 Sportsman. All that is left attached is the inner cup. It has a welded piece of metal across the front of the cup. I bought a 25 lb weight and slid it onto the slide hammer and have slid that thing countless times and it will not budge. I also special ordered Kroil and soaked it for several days and still nothing. I have pried and pried on the inner cup and still nothing. I am stumped. I have not tried to remove the other side yet. My fear is that the other side is stuck as bad as this one and I will be left with 2 bad axles. Any help would be greatly appreciate!

I know that Yamaha half axles actually have to be pushed in a bit and then pulled out with a quick jerk rather than a constant pressure. I was able to pull mine out by hand without any extra tools in a matter of about five minutes...good luck!

I've never tried Kroil, but I've had good luck with PB Blaster plus a small propane torch after it's soaked all night. If a slide hammer wont budge it,(we had a big Snap On slide hammer at work) then if you have access to an air impact and some longer bits,I've had good luck on really stuck ones impacting em loose from the rusted/corroded splines. Worst case scenario is trying to remove the other side like you said without tearing up the drive shaft and using a big punch through the gear case to knock the bad one out. Be sure to use anti seize on the splines when you drive them back into the gear case.

Would i put the bits in between the cv cup and the differential? Also, do you think i need to use like a pry bar of screwdriver on the opposite side to apply even pressure?
Thanks,

With a slide hammer, yes it helps if you have someone helping putting pressure between the cup and the differential with a pry bar. Then use rapid jerks on the slide hammer. I only had to use an air impact on a few rusted/frozen in drive shafts.

Thanks OPT! I finally got it out. I used an air hammer with pry bars and after lots of persuasion, the cup finally gave. There is lots of rust in there and was wondering if it would be a good idea to remove the other side to clean it up.
Thanks again!

I'd be real easy now to remove the other side and smear on some anti seize on the splines. Just impact it out through the opening!!

I will definitely do that OPT. I was wonder if it is difficult to replace the seals while I'm at it. I have the shop manual, but doesn't really give any details about how to remove them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
