I was wondering what some of the best mods are for a 2001 polaris scrambler 400 and are "hot seat performance" a good exhaust for a scrambler

Yeah, I was checking that out. They claim double the horsepower of stock with the stage 5 kit!!! I'd stick with stage 1 or 2.

Both companies make great pipes... From what I've read and done, there isn't much more bang for your buck as a pipe and proper clutching. I have the trailblazer 400(same thing different name) and I just went with a recommended clutching setup, high compression head, and a bored carb and I can't ask for a better upgrade. I don't need to go any faster down the trails I ride so I opted out of the pipe, but if you have to have more power that's about the easiest and cheapest way. Other than that Rick Ritter does alot with the 400's like Porting, High Comp heads, oversize/aftermarket carbs, clutching, ect. and for the serious Got-to-have-more-power guys a 5mm stroker kit .

Thanks for the info what brands of exhaust are loud and what color spring would be good for a higher top speed

Hot Seat/Speed Werx makes a very good pipe. I've ran the Hot Seat, Aaen and HPD top end pipes and all of them are very good and make power over the factory pipe as long as you change your primary spring for each pipes stall and shiftout RPM. Your going to see a change in sound with a different silencer more so than with a pipe. Some silencers are louder than others and from my own experience you can expect to see only slight gains in power, but nothing really massive on a stock machine with a different silencer.

The first thing that I would do is focus on the handling by adding a set of tires suited to the terrain that you'll be riding on, a steering stabilizer, aftermarket handlebars with a bend and height suited for you, a good set of grips, wider aftermarket axle and maybe some lighter wheels.

Next I would add a top end or trail pipe, 38mm TMX carb, modified airbox, aftermarket reedcage and an aftermarket airfilter.
