Clutch/belt engagement problem:

Actually this is for my sled which is basically the same system as my ATV's. Yesterday I rode all day as usual but towards the end of the ride I went once again in some really deep, heavy snow and the sled would not advance. I thought I had smoked the belt so I changed it. No good. Upon load the belt will not engage on the front pulley. It smokes it.
I removed the belt once again and revved it without. I noticed the front pulley "hits" all at once. In other words it does not gradually get smaller but pops in at once...
Any ideas what this could be? I am clueless.

****- The track and secondary are turning. I thought I was learning something yesterday and undid the secondary...all was fine.
NewfieBullet- I can hear the sheave pop in at low RPM's upon take-off. The whole belt/clutch system sounds off...very noisy and sounds like my belt is engaging then slipping too. Must be the spring because with the belt out it just goes "snap" and goes in all the way at once. But then again with the belt on it didn't seem to squeeze enough to grab the belt...thus smoking it?!
Can I do this myself? Should I take it to the dealer and just have it all checked at once? Shouldn't be more than 1hr work for them...plus they can check alignment too.

I'm alot more familiar with Arctic Cat clutchs, but I think it should be pretty straight forward with the Bombi too. Do it yourself.
The reason the belt is smoking is because it's grabing TOO much. If the spring is broke and the moveable sheave is shifting up all the way right off idle, then the reason the belt is smoking is because it's in too high a "gear" to move the sled.
If you had a Cat you'd be able to inspect the clutch without taking anything apart, but with Ski-doo you have to remove the cover. You shouldn't have to take of the clutch though, so unless there's something with Ski-doo I don't know about, you shouldn't need any special tools.
