trouble with a 2011 sportsman 500 HO

If you pull the shaft out you can check the hub bearing also for any roughness. Easy way to check the drive shaft is to have some one hold one end and twist it back and forth to feel for excessive play. You can tell which joint might be causing the problem. If the other drive shaft is ok,no sense in replacing it. Normally a two year old machine doesn't go through cv joints this quick, but anything can happen. Depends on how it's driven,loads,etc..

well I jacked it up left side was rocking top to bottom and side to side replaced the hub bearing (by the wheel) and its still doing it..... but I did notice something when I was taking it apart. the end that goes into the "gearbox" the knuckle pulled out easy like it separated with some turning of the other wheel and pushing in on it it popped back into place to me that is not normal is it????

The plunging joint at the gear case side is the one that takes a lot of wear compared to the cv at the wheel. It pulls out to a certain length adapting to the suspension rise and fall with the ball bearings riding in the channels and should stop at it's end play.If it pulls out, possible this the main problem. The channels can become enlarged and the ball bearings can make the click clacking noise from the wear. Still I'd replace the assembly. Nothing worse than having to go back in a little later to replace the outboard(wheel side cv) if it starts making noise also.
