2001 Sportsman 500 rear bearing questions
#1
So I was riding my 01 Sportsman the other day out though the woods to go fishing when I heard a "scraping" (?) sound and then stopped. I parked it to look it over and saw my right rear cv boot was twisted and when I tried to readjust it bearings started to fall out!!! Now it is only turning the left rear wheel no power is being transmitted to the right wheel at all now. Is it just a new set of bearings that are needed or am I in for a whole new axle cv joint etc etc etc? Thanks in advance.

I'd think it's time for a new drive shaft. The reason I say this is that I've just replaced plunging joints or just the cv on one drive shaft only, then ended up to have to come back in and replace the other joint which is actually more costly this way. Just replace the whole drive shaft and you wont have to go through this later if the other joint goes out. Just my old
again from what I encountered over the years..

So is that the $100 axle with cv joint special you find on ebay or am I really up that creek price wise? I am already having to get a new speedo to get 4x4 to work... It was a bear getting her out of the woods with only one wheel drive lol had to ultimately walk beside it blipping the throttle/pushing it far enough that I could get my truck into the woods to tow it out. Didn't help it was raining when all of this was happening either... thank you for the help!

take it apart and see is the only way to tell. If its the carrier bearing seized up and fell out like you describe, thats gonna be toast too, maybe even the housing. The bearings are cheap, do the other side too. If you had trouble like you said walking it out, something was stuck hard, not just a broke CV. Odds are the bearing gouged the housing if the race fell out, but you'll never know until you pull it off. Its easy to do

1. Replace the Speedometer ($300) Ouch
2. Remove the 6 pin plug from your speedometer
On the plug, short the brown/Brown White wires together and
tape it up good.
Do not reconnect the plug.
You will lose the function of the speedometer but your AWD will work.
The speedos are so fogged or scratched up there almost pointless anyways.

I don't know how many miles you put on your quad...I put new axles in (the 239 dollars for both side complete axle) and only got about 700 miles out of them before the cvs were clicking and shot again! If you are looking for continued use without having to think about it, go back to oem equipment and do the inner and outer on that axle. If you are looking for cheap and easy, order on ebay and you can have it changed in a half an hour!! On my second go round I did both axles with new cvs joints inner and outer...I did the work myself and it still cost me around 600 bucks! But I know that I should be able to get a few thousand miles out of them again!!
