Scrambler 400 opinions please
Im in the market for a quad I can leave at my cabin for my friends to ride for tight trails and do a little work. I wanted something a little sporty and 4x4 so I want a scrammy. It would stay up there for months at a time without use and I would need it to pull a small trailer for firewood and go slow on tight trails and such. I know a 500 would fit the bill better but I miss a 2 stroke and I want power. I would add a pipe, clutch kit, airbox mods, and new piston. Can these quads be putted around and used for light work with good bottom end?

Just my on this. We sold quite a few 350/400 2 strokes to farmers and ranchers when they first came out. A lot of of em used em for running/repairing fence lines, feeding cattle, spraying trees and other odd jobs. A lot I had to rejet for them because of the way they drove em,plus many were bad on fouling plugs putting along constantly at low speeds.Almost all that came in for any kind of service had a couple extra plugs in with the tool kits. I'd stick with a 500 if you're going to be doing something similar.. Again just my opinion.

All the above comments have merit for you not to buy a Scrammy 400 4x4, but I'm here to tell yah, Hell yah buy one and use it the way you desribed. I owned 3-1999 Scrammy 400 4x4's at one time, did exactly what you described, plus plowed a long driveway in the Winter. The key is jetting (Polaris sends them out damn rich) them to your needs, clutching for the way you intend to use the machine, and some aftermarket reeds (Polaris stock reeds suck big time), plastic for durability or V-Force for throttle response. Many will tell yah to block off oil pump, but I set mine to 60:1 (notches on plate) and added 1-2 ounces of oil per gallon of fuel (4 gallon tank). Just remember that at 60:1, "no" wheelies for a mile at a time!!!
P.S.
When looking for a 2 stroke Scrammy, make sure you check counter balancer oil, if it's Milky, you got water pump/seal issues
