Default Motor Issues...

Riding my 700 Sportsman last weekend I noticed a knock starting to form, as I rode it back to the trailer it got louder and louder. I feared it was the push rod bearing or the cylinder rings. After checking to make sure it was not the clutch, I began tearing down the top end of my quad. Nothing looks beat or malfunctioned. As I got to the cylinders (before tear down it had 85 psi) they were smooth with no scratches no signs of wear. As I moved down toward the crank I noticed that the push rods had a little play in them. Doesn't seem like enough play to be causing such a loud knock, WHAT COULD IT BE??????????

Sounds like you may have to go deeper than the pistons. Seems like I had more rod problems on the 700 and the early 325 engines than any other machine. If in fact it's a rod bearing making the noise, kits are available now to rebuild your crank through place like Hot Rods. There should be no up and down play on the connecting rods.

The crank looks to be a one piece unit??? Is there a link you can post for hotrods? Thanks OPT

They have plenty of cranks and lower end parts kits for the 800 that a machine shop could install, but you need to call them about the 700 parts kits availability. The difference between the 700 and 800 was the stroke. Hot Rods, Inc.

Well no luck finding anyone who can service the crank shaft on the 700. And it seems that replacing it, and all other parts and gaskets associated with a complete rebuild may be too $$$$$ consuming. Can anyone help with places that sells rebuilt engines?
