But he says that the 2010 kit will not work on my 2012 400HO. What has changed??

Royal wants $150 for this exact same kit.

 

2010 400 was based on the compact import Hawkeye type frame with a different transmission and different struts. Your model is the full size one and shares the same components including strut cartridge as the 2010 Sportsman 500. He may have been confused and thought you had the 2010 model 400 which is completely different on the front struts. Seems like this kit should work.2010 Sportsman 400. Your 2012 400 uses the same strut and cartridge as the 2010 Sportsman 500 that the kit lists will fit.
