what to buy?

Dependable little machines, but like you said down on the power scale,BUT during the early years this was the only engine Polaris had and even with awd it would go where a lot of others couldn't,plus stayed with a lot of larger machines at the time as far as rough terrain. This engine is what built the Polaris atv division in my opinion.A lot of people would come into the shop in 1987 and had seen them on the trails but never heard of them. From then on they kept improving, but for the most part the engine remained the same until it's last year in 2006. 21 years is a pretty good track record,1985-2006. Less complicated than the 400 or 500 and plenty of them still running around.

sounds great, i was looking at some scramblers and found one, its a 95 4x4 and looks very nice, seller says the plastics are not scratched, it has front and rear racks, tires look good on it, he is asking 1200 for it, only downfall is its 3 hour drive away but i am willing to drive to get something worth the money

Another thing on the 400 Scrambler if this is what you're looking at,is to pull the counter balancer dip stick located under the carb(orange or black plastic looking ****) and make sure it's clean oil and not milky colored. This is a sure sign of water pump seals leaking if it is. Item #41. http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...1995&fveh=5397
