500 scrambler 4X4 clunk in reverse
#1
no noise in forward, but when shifted into reverse there is clunking, alot like a bad sprocket and chain. its possible the front sproket is bad, but I think its the tranny. any suggestion?

sorry its a 2000. Strange thing is i bought it late winter and it was cold out.. no noise at all in my testing it, but i only drove it maybe 50 feet in reverse. its been sitting since. Have the problem with the one hub (front) not engaging but I think i got that covered from the threads here. Ordered some parts and was going to tear into front hubs.. but when i moved it this clunk appeared, right away, at first i assumed bad sprocket, but unless its the front one, i think its the tranny .. maybe the chain in their? but im surprised there is no sound in forward if the chain is that lose? or does it only work in reverse (chain in tranny not drive to rear axle one).. as I say, only in reverse.. works great in forward.

Problem is there are TWO chains in this model tranny and could possibly be the problem. IF you tear into a tranny always replace both chains. Another thing is don't over look the prop shaft u-joints going from the tranny to the front diff.Could be as simple as worn joints causing the noise if you eliminate the external chain or sprocket.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
