Over all probably the best engine Polaris has had. 500 engine had a good run for 17 years. A little cutting corners on the last few year models with no recoil start, but can be added if you want.Weak link was the plastic roll cage in the front diff. An aluminum roll cage was listed as a "high performance accessory" Item#12.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Muffler while not give you much improve vs the money . If you have spare cash put it in aftermarket tires or a winch.
More bang for the buck then a pipe.

Alloy rims will also lighten your wheel weight greatly vs steel which intern will give more get up and go.

Goodpoint. I never thought of it that way. Are they as durable?

There tuff, just makes sure you get 12" rims not 14" that way you have 2" more side wall tire height for cushioning before a rock get through and dents the rim.
Low profile tires are nice on a sport cars but useless on a off road machine.
