Default 1988 trail boss 250 4x4

hi everyone:
I have a question about an older(relic) atv, picked up a 1988 trail boss as a learning project and I am in the middle of replacing the strut bearings and wheel bearings. My question is I know that the outer bearing just get filled with type f trans fluid or polaris 4wd oil but am I supposed to pack the strut bearings with grease? After doing some searching online I am still not sure so I am hoping that someone here will have a great answer. There are 4 bearings in the system (starting from the outside goes 2 roller bearings and cups then the mechanical 4wd hub unit and then 2 more roller and cup bearings.)

thanks in advance
Jamie

Just a light coat of bearing grease, not lathered up like in the video. Best to use Demand Drive hub fluid, better than the atf originally called for in the earlier models.Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4 -- Front Hub Work - YouTube

thanks old polaris tech:
I had bought a Clymer manual but kinda useless, now the only thing I was wondering is in the video the gentleman greases the 4wd hub as well and after reading the repair it states not to have grease contact the 4wd mechanical hub or it will not engage?
I thought this is why the use of thinner oil was installed and also did not see any grease on any of the 8 bearings not even a hint?
So before I go any further (and screw up ) I would ask the atv world. So
just a light coat meaning do not pack them like back in the day or trailer bearings ?

thanks again for the reponse

Yes too much grease can interfere with the awd action. That's why I said lightly coat the bearings with just a film of grease OR simply coat them in demand drive fluid. Main thing is to not have dry bearings when you reassemble.Clymers will say one thing, factory manual will say another.

Thanks old polaris tech !

This is the first atv rebuild I have done got the machine as a basket case, so I want to make sure done right the first time. You seem to be very helpful and always have good direction, I really appreciate you taking the time and helping a newbie out.
Gonna head up to the dealer now for the oil and bolt up the front end tonight. Hopefully it will be ready for the weekend as long as it doesn't get in the way of fishing.

thanks again
Jamie
