Welcome to the forums.
As with any brand, you will get mixed reviews. Either they loved them or hated them. I've had a couple of Polaris machines and they worked very well for me. Good maintenance is the key for almost any brand.
One of the biggest arguments against them is the belt drive system. Never any issues with mine, and you're seeing other manufacturers using it as well.
We have an excellent member here who worked at a Polaris dealer for years and is very helpful and knowledgeable. A big plus for any brand is having a place you can get great advice.
What year model is it? Might be helpful in any figuring out any bugs with that particular model/generation.

Good bike its really the well known 500 Sportsman that has been around for 18 years years but with a smaller bore making it a 455cc 2013 Polaris Sportsman® 400 H.O. ATVs and it uses a smaller 34mm carb vs a 40mm.
The Motor is Japanese its made by Fuji industries own by Subaru. I have 4000 miles on mine so far.
The ATV will beat a 500 Foreman or Rubicon any day in power (Tied with Rubicon in power) and ride comfort and braking with its IRS, rear hydraulic disk and 31hp ohc.
And all Polaris have true AWD and only the 500 Foreman gets it for 2014 in their line up.
Shifting gears is a chore vs a gas and go CVT tranny that's why 95% of all 4x4 are CVT now.

Ditto on above comments. Right in the middle between entry level and more expensive machines. Fugi engines are what made Polaris into the company they are now and the 400 is still one of the most dependable and almost bulletproof engines if you just do regular maintenance. Only two draw backs is that it has a stator cover instead of a full recoil, but that can be ordered if wanted and is a simple bolt on. Front diff still shows a plastic roll cage that some had problems with and a "performance" aluminum one is still offered as an optional replacement, but hopefully they've addressed this and it may be stronger?
Those two items still wouldn't be enough to not make the 400 a good choice. Not everyone has 10-11,000 dollars or more to plunk down for an atv and the dealers should sell quite a few.Hope it stays in the line up for years to come.
