Default '01 Sportsman 400 oil change question

Getting ready for an oil change. I've read many posts about the best oil to use. I'm pretty sure what is currently in the ATV is NOT synthetic. I've seen many different weights suggested. I guess it depends on the use of the ATV. All mine is used for is yard work-mowing/snow plowing, etc. on my 5 acres. I was planning to use the same oil I use in my jeep 10/30.

Any comments, suggestions? Will this be OK?

Basically unlimited to choice of oil and weights. If you live in an extremely hot temp area, then you could use 10/30,even Polaris has an "extreme" 10w50 for hot climates or extreme use,BUT there are better choices out there if you don't. You need a thin enough weight to get to the cam and rockers arms quick. Using 0w40,5w40 or 5w50 in any good synthetic is probably the better choice in getting the oil moving quicker and still be able to protect on hot days Remember the "w" stands for winter.

Thanks for the response.

Maybe you can help with another question. I'll be putting the rebuilt carb back in this evening and I'm concerned about the throttle cable hookup inside the carb. My fat fingers had a heck of a time disconnecting the cable. The small brass piece that the cable attaches to is a little intimidating. Any suggestions? Are there instructions on what to do. The manual doesn't really say much.

Thread the cable adjuster into the carb body at about the same spot originally, then tighten the lock nut.Thread the cable on the throttle wheel, turn the wheel until the soldered cable end passes the cutout for the slotted brass holder in the wheel. Push the holder in over the bare cable with the beveled end facing the cable end. Slowly release the wheel and the cable end will lock into the brass holder.

This is much appreciated. I was sitting here trying to visualize what I can do to make this work. Your directions are super.

Carb install went well. Engine started right up and with a few minor adjustments it seems to be idling fine. Will put it all back together this evening and take it for a ride.

QUESTION - The choke appears to be working correctly but the choke rod (lever) can only be pulled out about 1/2 the distance of what it was before unhooking it from the carb. Is this something that I should be concerned about?

When I pull it out all the way the engine stalls and I had to use the choke to initially start the engine after installing the carb so it appears to be working.

Check that the cable isn't binding from the pod going down to the carb. The slack at the **** can be adjusted at the carb if need be. Main thing is the choke circuit closes all the way. If you're concerned enough you can pull the top cap off the carb, remove the slide and pull the choke back and forth and see if the brass plunger closes all the way in.

The 400 Sportsman is the same Fugi dry sump motor as the 500s just with a smaller bore or stroke or both.
Its highly recommended to stick with full synthetic and 0w or 5w at most.
Lots of oil filter to chose from though.

So if you want another option these filters will work. The longer 3.5" and the 2.5" long. Plenty of room for the longer ones.

These Oil Filters have 20 x 1.5mm threads, 14 psi by-pass valve, anti-drain back valve, 2.3" O.D. gasket 2.5" to 3.5" long.
