shifter linkage

I have 2008 sportsman 500. Which hole is the shifter linkage (shifter bar) supposed to go in, on the lever coming out of the transmission? There is 3 holes and what is supposed to hold it in there?

What holds the end of the bar in the hole? I looked at the parts list but wasn't sure, is it part 22?

Shaft #7 slides through the cover,splines line up with the lever splines. #22 is the nut that holds the shift lever on the shaft.
