Default 2004 400 sportsman AWD?

My speedo shows AWD when i turn it on.I assume it is working. What would be a way to test it.My take on it is the back wheels would have to loose traction before i can tell if it is truely engaged.I suppose i could jack the rear wheels off the ground and carefully give it a little throttle

That's how I tested mine but you should jack up all 4 wheels.

Just nose it up to a tree or wall on dirt while in low range , if its just in 2wd the rear wheels will break traction quick.
In awd it will try to climb the tree (I know).

I jacked the rear wheels off the ground and gave it several tests like that. Each time the front engaged as soon as the rear wheels turned.I also put it nose down into a deep hill and backed out testing the over ride button it flashed slow and engaged the AWD nice in reverse

The amount of rear slip required to engage the front is almost undetectable it happens so fast here is a good video on it.

Hey I am new to the forum. I have question regarding my 2004 sportsman 700 awd system. One day when riding it the steering stared pulling left hard. So I jacked it up and sure enough it is locked in awd with the switch off. It stays locked in even in reverse without the overdrive button pushed in and awd system off. I have no idea how to go about fixing this. So any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Getting to be a common problem on the centralized awd systems.Could be an armature place magnetized causing it to remain engaged or more common were racked plastic roll cages.Item #9,23.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse PLus parts have been updated, but probably still has the plastic roll cage. Most people just jump to the aluminum ones and solves the problem.Sportsman 700 ALUMINUM Front Differential Roll Cage | Quad Logic Plus amazon has them also.
Amazon.com: Polaris Sportsman 600 700 800 ALUMINUM Front Differential Roll Cage - 3234167, 3234377, 3234455: Automotive Amazon.com: Polaris Sportsman 600 700 800 ALUMINUM Front Differential Roll Cage - 3234167, 3234377, 3234455: Automotive
Only way to tell is to tear the front diff down to see what the problem is.
