Default 1993 Polaris Sportsman broken counterbalance, water pump shaft, oil drive

Ok so I'm still working on this Sportman and I got the transmission back together. So fired it up for a test drive prior to buttoning everything up. Took a couple of laps in the driveway and the hot light came on. Radiator was ice cold so time to tear into the engine. See below what I found. So I'm piecing together pieces to get it back together but any ideas why the shaft would break it both those locations? Want to make sure there isn't some other underlying issues. Bearings were rough but not locked up.

Needless to say this ATV is certainly getting me lots of experience at working on them.

Ignore this one as it was the one hung up for moderator approval due to the pictures and me being a newbie. Replacement thread:

I don't see any way to edit title of this either.

Mike, I learned the hard way, my dad said there is a nice looking 4 wheeler for sale for $900 up the road. It was a 1996 Polaris Sportsman 400L with only 1,300 miles. I wanted a spare bike to go with my 2001 Arctic Cat 500 and in spite of having a 2 stroke, it looked 2 good 2 be true. Damned thing put me in the poor house! Every time I rode it, had to fix something else. I finally got everything fixed (it didn't break for 2 consecutive rides) and sold it for $1,600. If yours has a 2 stroke and 3 drive chains, don't go too far alone on it. just saying ...
