Default 2002 sportsman 700 front hub axle question

currently rebuilding the front end on the 700. new axles, bearings etc...
When I installed the axle into the hub, the axle sticks out of the hub a few mm. When I install the washer and nut, the washer hits the axle not allowing the axle and hub to compress together.
I figured that you would want the axle and hub to be a snug fit and squeeze the strut bearing a little. This way there is no movement or wiggle when riding.
Do I need to drill out the wash a little to clear the axle or is this gap normal.
The washer came with the old bike and not the new axles. And didn't check this on the old setup before I replaced everything.

Also, anyone know the torque specs.

thanks

My 2005 manual calls for 70 foot pounds on the hub nut torque. If it's an aftermarket drive shaft there may be some differences in length. You may have to modify washers, etc to work right. Hub needs to be snug with no wobble.

well, finally got to looking at the front axles again and it appears that I need the early version axle that has the splines going all the way to the CV joint. And the ones that I bought, the splines stop about an inch from the cv joint. Which doesn't let the CV fit snug against the Wheel bearing or hub. which allows the wheel/hub to have some free play.
Guess I'll be ordering more..
Too bad the early version is more expensive..
does anyone know a cross reference. Might be cheaper if I search other models and not the 700.

Looks to be cheaper to buy 2 hubs to match.
I'm guessing any front hub from a 2003 and up would work.
I assume the hub bearings didn't change.

Guess you'd be needing this part number then. Later model 2002 hub part number along with other models that used the same hub.

thanks for the info, just got 2 hubs for $30. better than $200 for more axles.
I gotta pay more attention for split year models.

Hated before/after certain mfg date parts differences. Just caused confusion with owners and parts suppliers. Hope the hubs works out for you ok.

I've ran into the same problem, can you just make spacers out of washers or does that cause other issues?
