Default Polaris trail boss 250 2x4/4x4 parts interchange

New here, my brother recently decided to give up on his 87 (?) trail boss 250 4x4. Last time we had it out it backfired really bad and blew the header off. I'm very very green to 2 strokes. My buddy says he believes the crank seals are bad and it's in dire need of a rebuild. I have a line on a trail boss 250 2x4, running parts machine. Will the engine swap over to the 4x4? Along with some other components like the brake system, etc. thanks in advance I really liked this machine when it was running and Id like to ressurect it so my wife can ride to.

Basic engine and mounts didn't change hardly any from the beginning to end of production. Shouldn't be problem on swapping. Other minor parts may take a little rigging.

Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Any advice on where else to find parts for this old polaris? Ebay seems to be my best bet so far.

I'm in ct, there's a guy a little ways from me that has a pair of 2x4s. Both are in good shape and run but he snagged parts off one for the other. I'm trying to get the parts one for mine for 200-300$ bucks and my buddy might buy the complete one

Main difference over the years was electronics also. As long as you have the complete wiring harness stator, cdi, etc for any particular model it shouldn't be a problem on swapping engines. Trying to mismatch electronics is where problems happen.

The first picture is the "parts" one, second is the runner. As much as I want the 4wd one to ride, I think I snag the couple pieces this one needs to run its pretty mint for a 30 year old machine.
