Valve Adjust.

.006 intake and exhaust. More than likely you'll find that they'll be on the money. Pull the square plate on the right side of the engine. Pulling the plug makes it easier, but not necessary. Have the cam sprocket alignment pin center of the head is TDC. Then you can check/adjust the valves. If the valves need adjusting use TWO .006 feeler gauges on the dual exhaust rocker arm to keep it from cocking. Simple adjusters that you loosen the nut and turn the square adjuster to set clearance and then tighten the lock nut. If you need more help, just get this cheap manual.2011 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO Service Manual PDF Download

As with most valves whether equipped with manual adjusters or shim under bucket systems, over time valve clearance will tighten up simply for the fact that valves wear thin on the edges or mushroom, causing valve stems to raise upwards.Intake valves are made of softer metal than exhaust and most of the time they tighten up first. Every machine is different though. I've checked some Sportsman 500s that had a lot of miles and years on them and clearances were still spot on. Some I checked that were just a couple years old needed adjusting. Just a good idea to check them once a year.
