99 sp500 left front hub- needs a doctor!
#1
My left front hub is enagaging when in two wheel drive. It sporatically engages and lets go as it feels like it. I thought I'd ask experts before I take the tools to it? I was riding in snow and had it wound out in two wheel drive. Next thing I know we are going left off the trail. It doesn't seem to engage until about 15-20 mph. Bill or any body have any ideas on where to start looking for the problem??

Harleydude,
I am in two wheel drive and my left front hub grabs like it is in 4 wheel drive. I am trying to find any one else who might have had this problem before. The way the system is set up you have electrical and mechanical. I was playing in snow in two wheel drive. I had the rear wheels broke loose at about 20 mph when (bam) the left front suddenly enagages. It made for an interesting left hand exit off the trail!!

I would guess that your problem is mechanical. The hub is sticking and causing it to engage. I would first try draining the fluid and refilling with Kerosene and then draining again. Then refilling with new fluid. Run it for a while and then change the fluid again. Hopefully this will cure the engagement problem. If not, you may need to tear the hub apart and check the roller cage for damage. Engaging at that high of speed may well have already damaged the rollers. Hope this helps.

Changed my name from harleydude to BigDogohio. My friends sp500 was in 2 wheel drive when he was on the ice and the front hub locked in of course it blew it out from the speed. All the dealers we talked to said that is the way polares designed them,if the back wheels spin to fast when in 2wheel drive the front hubs try to lock in.I dont think you have a problem just have to be careful. But talk to your dealer and see what they say and let me know see if they say the same thing.I have a scrambler 400 4x4 and this has happened to me also but did not break anything, lucky.

Magnummudman,
I pulled the hub apart and found some water and fine grit. I think the nut holding the spindal on was over tightened as well. I couldn't find any torque numbers for tightening the hub? I believe the little spring holding the clutch assembly together is the culprit. I was thinking the problem was some kind of electical short since it engaged so forcefully.

You need to clean and totaly inspect the front hubs then replace the garter spring DO NOT STREATCH THE SPRING !!!!!!!!!!!!! You will need a new one if you do. Reassemble and fill with new oil. I will email you the tourqe specs latter tonight. Don,t have time right now.
