'98 Xplorer 400: adjust drive chain?
#2
To adjust the rear drive chain on your explorer, by the book ,take a tie down strap and tie it between the rear axle and the rear bumper. Tighten it down so as to colapse the rear suspension so that the rear axle and the transmission output shaft are level with each other.then 1. Loosen the chainguard 2.loosen the eccentric bolts(2) 3. Insert a pin punchthrough the sprocket hub and into the eccentric axle housing. 4. Roll the 4wheeler ahead or back until the proper tension is achieved. (about 1/4 inch of slack)5 . tighten the eccentric bolts to 60ft.lbs 6. tighten the chain guard allowing 1/8 inch of clearence between it and the rear sprocket. There is a picture in the manual that makes it easier if you would like to have it I can Email it to you If you need it.

Kagey,
Thanks for your reply! Turns out a member in Boise (Chris) emailed me a tip on a fellow who has several of these pretty close by (Larry). He helped me thru the process last nite, and all seems to be working well. Guess I'd best get to a dealer and arrange for an owner's manual, ya think? Turns out these little beuties (4 wheelers in general) are a little more complicated than I expected and I'd rather not trash my first one thru lack of knowledge...
Thanks again all, what a cool board!
