SP 500 Maintenance
#1
I just bought a 98 and a half SP 500 and was wanting to do the maintenance myself to save some money and to get aquainted with it. What all do I need to buy to do a complete maintenance that the Polaris dealer would do?
I have 550 miles on it. Also, I would like to know any prices of the products that I will have to buy. I have an owners manual on the way by mail, I'm sure that will help with these questions, but I'm just curious how much all of this will cost and so I can get all of the things together that I need.
I live in Mississippi and in the winter time the weater and ridding conditions can get pretty nasty with alot of mud and water. Just to keep that in mind for any suggestions.
I know that I need:
-Oil Filter
-Motor Oil
-Gear Box Oil
-Grease
-Air Filter "Any recommedations on different brands or types and how much?
Do I need to do anything to the radiator?

I have a 99 SP-500 and perform my own maintenance to reduce operating cost. The shop manual that I have is good up to 1998 waiting for the update.
A good quality motor oil is a must 0w-40 Polaris oil or any 5w-30 synthetic oil, I use 5w-30 Royal Purple snythetic, Fram oil filter PH6017A at about half the cost of the Polaris filter.
A good grease gun with a high quality grease. I grease my quad every second ride depending on the conditions it had to endure.
The biggest improvement I have made is extending my rear brake pad life by keeping the caliper clean and using ebc brake pads.
Keep the air filter clean change the oil about every five tanks of gas, grease it regular and you will enjoy every ride you go on. Good Luck
