Basically it kicks in very quickly so no need to leave it on when you don't need it. I use 4x4 a lot when climbing steep hills too. That's one time you don't want to find out later that you needed extra traction. Many times it probably wasn't necessary but I don't want to spin my tires trying to climb a steep hill.
