Cooling fan comes on and off when riding as normal. Did something that it hasn't before. After a regular ride I shut it off and the fan came on after shutting it off. It ran for a minute, shut off and came back on within 30 seconds. It ran a minute and shut off. It did this 4 or 5 times. I checked coolant, it wasn't low or extremely hot. Now even when cold, if you turn key on and right off, fan will start for about 5 seconds and shut off.. Can't figure this one out. Hot light never came on.

welcome to the forum. in that year there were certain models that had control module issues and that might be whats wrong with yours. there was a recall on again on certain models and It's been so long I can't remember. I know 450's were effected and maybe some 500's as well. I would say the sensor but they usually don't act that way when they go bad.

If it does it with the key on and the engine off it's okay, but if the fan runs when the key is turned to the "off" position or not even in the ATV you have a problem. The kind of problem that can make one with a bad ECM catch on fire. Some 2006 Sportsman 500 H.O. models were definitely part of the recall. You can enter your VIN at this Polaris site and see if yours was one of them.

You're welcome. They recalled a lot of ATVs for the ECM. My friend's Sportsman 1000 fan doesn't run at all once you turn it off. My other friend's Sportsman 850 will, and every older Sportsman will AFAIK.
