2005 Sportsman clutch/belt?
#1
This must be a fairly common problem. I have searched and found several posts on this type of problem, but I haven't found anything that suggests a solution.
I see that creeping and stalling when stopped in gear are mentioned several times.
Best description I can come up with: My machine has become increasingly difficult to shift, and now the only way I can shift is to turn it off, then it shifts easily. I put a new belt in, hoping that might fix it. It didn't. It is the correct belt. It looks like the belt is riding right on the shaft and is too small. Therefore it is constantly engaged. I have it idling low, so it is not a high rpm problem that is keeping it engaged. I bought this with 500 hours on it and it was not a problem then, but got increasingly worse over time. I've considered many things. I am also wondering if the rear brake could have anything to do with it, since that must be applied to be able to shift. However, the way the belt sits in the clutch, I think it is a belt issue.
I apologize if this seems to duplicate other threads. However, after checking out other threads, I still did not find any conclusive solution. I appreciate your thoughts and patience.

the issue is the one way bushing which is the ebs part of the primary clutch. it is suppose to ride where it is for it to work correctly to where you mentioned. your right as it is a common issue and sorry to sa, it takes special tools to fix it so you will not be able to do it your self unless you spend money to buy them. also unless youreplaced both clutches you will not be able to buy pass it. the only other issue that causes the creeping(since you said it was idled low) could be a bad engine mount(they are rubber) which would some times through the alignment off. but my bet is on the ebs bushing.

its your drive clutch, components inside it are worn causing the belt to not be centered on the drive clutch. my 05 sportsman 700 did the same. you have ebs which means your primary and secondary clutch are different than non ebs machines. if you dont care about having ebs, convert both clutches and belt to non ebs. rebuilding your current drive clutch is possible but the problem will come back sooner than later.
